Nintendo 64 N64 Controller Pak FRAM Mod. Permanent Saves, no battery. This is the best solution money can buy to save N64 games and will ensure your data outlives you, without any maintenance to batteries or other non-permanent solutions.
As this uses original hardware, only the old SRAM chip was carefully removed along with the battery, which is no longer needed and a new FRAM chip was meticulously soldered into its place.
I only use authentic Cypress FRAM chips sourced from digikey, which are significantly more expensive than some of the clones you see on ebay use.  Cypress has published extensively on tests with their FRAM chip versus cheap knock-offs from China and the reliability, durability differences are remarkable.  Cypress chips are rated for 150+ years when stored under normal conditions.
Also it's important to note that Nintendo made contacts have 30 years of track proving how well constructed and durable they are. Newer clones almost certainly don't' have the durability that those crafted in Japan in the 90s and early 2000s have proven to have. While it's possible the clone chips could be durable, it's also possible (and likely) contacts on those chips will be more prone to damage and less likely to last.
If you want the best, then buy authentic Cypress FRAM chips using
original hardware
. Any other method takes third party risk and also may risk chip failure.
